Different Kinds Of Surfboard Socks

By Dennis Scott

Surfboards are notorious for getting nicks and dings and other damage from use. When storing and transporting them it is important to protect them from more potential damage. Damage to these increases risk to safety and can compromise the integrity to the board itself. Using a protective covering can minimize the damage and keep a board looking clean and well maintained. Surfboard socks and other types of protective covering will allow them to last longer.

Three types of covering and carrying cases are typical. The sock type is the first and most basic of the three. The second is just called a bag and comes with a handle. The last of the three is referred to as the coffin because of its thick and boxy shape. Each one will help protect the boards and keep wax from transferring to others.

The sock is the most basic type of protective covering. It is lightweight and easy to store. This will protect your board from basic scratches and keep water and sand away. It's also good at protecting the wax coating and keep the finish from being damaged by the sun. These are not good at keeping boards cool, so when storing in the sun be careful that the wax doesn't melt inside the sock.

The bag is a lightweight but sturdy option. These include a handle for easy carrying. The padding is not very thick but it is thick enough to protect it from minor bumps. The design is such that it is also good at keeping surfboards cool when it sits in the sun. Having these options is a step up from the sock and make a big difference.

The last and highest level of protection is called the coffin. It is named this because of its shape. They are usually big enough to carry several boards at once. They also provide the same level of sun and heat protection that the next level down provides. The padding is much thicker, almost double the bag, so it is a preferred design if you are traveling by plane or going on an overseas trip.

There are many different companies that make custom designed socks. Since many surfers are either professional or artistic the desire to have a custom design or logo on both the board and the protection is high. Though regular designs are plentiful, when you're proud of your board and surfing skills this is a great way to show off.

Do it yourself options are becoming more popular. For those that are not needing the more sturdy bags, making their own sock is an option. Using Lycra to make the sock will help by making it just stretchy enough that a snug fit can be achieved without making it impossible to get a board in and out. There are many different patterns to choose from. This is a better option that stacking boards with a towel in between since it will protect the wax on each board.

It is really important to protect your board if you are serious about surfing. Boards themselves are not cheap so caring for them properly is a must. Whether you make your own or buy professionally made protection, you'll be grateful that you stepped up from using towels for the process. This will make your surfboard last longer.
